Overview.
The Eraser 2.1.0 package contains two version of the application:
√...The Eraser 2.1.0 (68K) for 68K Macs or, in emulation, for Power Macs.
√...The Eraser 2.1.0 (PPC) for Power Macs.
The Eraser is an useful application for erasing files, folders, disks.
The Eraser performs security deletions, by using a sophisticated procedure. It lets you customize many details of its "security" job, making impracticable the files recovery by whatever utilities. The Eraser can also perform simple deletions, allowing the files recovery by appropriate utilities. You can even customize the simple deletion.
Working on disks The Eraser performs a complete deletion of hard/floppy/removable disk catalog (on floppies it skips the initializing/verifying process reducing considerably the waiting time).
The Eraser returns a lot of informations while is working and allows to stop its performance at any time, moreover works fine and fast in background, deleting large groups of items...
The Eraser is Drag Manager and Internet Config aware. It requires at least System 7 to run.
Open items.
You can open disks, folders, files by Drag&Drop onto The Eraser desktop icon, by selecting them through "File menu" or by dragging theirs icons on The Eraser "Drag Window" (shown below).
Preferences.
The "Preferences Dialog" is reachable through "File menu":
You can decide here how the Eraser should work. The controls are auto-explaining, I think...
Simple erasing: The Eraser performs a simple deletion, but finding a locked item, it shows an information alert, then stops its job.
Erase and delete locked: The Eraser performs a simple deletion, erasing also locked items.
Erase and move locked to Trash: The Eraser performs a simple deletion, moving locked itmes to trash. Finding, in the trash, a duplicate filename, it shows an information alert, then stops its job.
Erase, move locked to Trash and delete duplicate filename: The Eraser performs a simple deletion, moving locked items to trash. Finding, in the trash, a duplicate filename, The Eraser deletes it.
Security: turn ON the security deletion. This radio button enables the couple of pop-up menus and the ckeck box below it.
Change file attribute: The Eraser changes the name of target item, its size, its creation date, its type and its creator, before delete it.
Fork to overwrite: you may decide whether overwrite both data and resource forks or only one of forks.
Overwrite turns: you may decide how many times The Eraser will overwrite any fork (up to four).
Be careful: in "Security" mode The Eraser deletes all, locked files even.
While The Eraser is working, a window notifies a lot of informations:
When the security deletion is turned OFF, the barber pole doesn't appears.
Be careful: when you delete files or folders, The Eraser will not ask you to confirm...when you delete disks The Eraser will ask you to confirm!
Disks.
The Eraser deletes the disk catalog. A limitation: erasing a disks it can't switch in background.
Hot Key.
If you hold down option key, while drag or select an item, The Eraser lets you set the preferences, before work!
Menus.
You may perform any action of above by using the "Open" menu item inside the "File Menu". You can also use Hot Key, while you're selecting a file.
From "Internet Menu" you can open Internet Config , send me e-mails, visit my web pages or copy my addresses.
More.
While The Eraser is the foreground application, you can press escape or command-period to exit during its performance (note that escape key tracking is more fast than command-period tracking). Instead when The Eraser is the background application you can use only escape key to stop its job.
When The Eraser completes its job and if it's in background, then attempts to call back your attention, to show its statistics, by a simple notification procedure. If you do nothing or are working with another application, after a brief waiting time (about 30 seconds), it close its info window.
Be careful: if you want to stop The Eraser while it is working in "Security" mode you should hold down escape or command-period until it completes the erasing of current file, because it tracks the "exit" keys only at the end of deletion procedure (yes, it's a "Security" procedure!!! ;-) ). If the "Security " mode appears too slow, you can make it more fast by means of an adequate preferences setting.
Cursor:
The Eraser scans folders/disk.
The Eraser deletes a file.
